Mathieu lives in Paris, Alice in a small seaside village
They have a brief relationship and then each goes their own way. To chase away his melancholy, Mathieu goes to the Thalasso, where he finds Alice by chance. When Mathieu receives a call from the director of the theater whose production he has given up, the director’s voice is played by filmmaker Stéphane Brizé himself.

Levine. This French film by Stéphane Brizé is a sensitive drama/romance in which old lovers meet again at different stages of their lives. Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher are a well-matched couple whose chemistry was crucial to the film’s plot.

I’m a little torn because the film’s portrayal of their (re)connection is very nuanced and seems true. For example, there is a wedding scene in which two men “sing”. (wildly) like birds to each other, conversing quite eloquently and magnetically – would check this site out.

However, the film is painfully slow, emotionally terse, and clocks in at nearly two hours longer than a more efficient running time. Brizé’s formations and long takes are beautiful but fairly sparse, as are his inner workings. However, along with the story’s very familiar plot threads, it lacks the seriousness that would justify this hackneyed treatment.
